taking a long hard look…

Today I took an exam that will effectively determine my eligibility to remain in my Ph.D. program here at UCI. All I can say is that I hope I passed, but since completing the test my mind has been racing with possible scenarios and situations that may come up if I failed.

However, rather than listing them here, I’d rather not think about them. If I failed, perhaps I will revisit the subject. Otherwise, I will congratulate myself and continue this chapter of my life.

Cycling…not just for cyclists…

I bought a road bike last July, and since buying it I’ve been pretty happy.  This year I mostly used it as transportation to and from school, but recently I’ve been riding it a lot more as a recreational/exercise activity.  Irvine has a great network of bike paths, and I’ve had a ton of fun exploring areas of town that I wouldn’t normally see in a car.  It is also extremely exhilarating to see how fast I can go down some of the hills around the area.  Also, after a short morning ride (5-6 miles) I feel better throughout the day than I would if I got no exercise.  On weekends it’s pretty fun to see how far I can go before I get too tired and have to turn around.

As far as upkeep goes, I haven’t taken care of it as much as I should have, but fortunately when you buy a bike from Performance they give you free tune-ups for the lifetime of the bike.  As far as overall customer care goes, however, I would recommend other local bike shops over Performance, since Performance is such a large corporation.  It often seems that they don’t really drive home the importance of good customer service to their employees.

Anyways, getting a bike was one of the better decisions I’ve made this year, so I recommend it to anyone and everyone.

Upcoming…

These are some things that I am looking forward to: (in approximately chronological order)

  • Eating dessert. (tonight)
  • Sleeping. (always)
  • Seeing Christine in a couple weeks. (hopefully)
  • Playing Grand Theft Auto IV – comes out on April 29, and you know I’ll be in line at midnight to pick up my copy (for 360, of course).
  • Moving to and setting up my new place. (May 22)
  • Being done with one year of grad school. (June 18)
  • Getting married (and everything that goes along with that). (July 26)
  • Having Zim and Amy up here at UCI with me and Christine. (August sometime)

These are some things that I’m not looking forward to:

  • Teaching class at 8:00 a.m. (tomorrow)
  • Studying. (all the time)
  • Grading midterms. (sometime next month)
  • Taking finals. (Mid-June)
  • Taking comprehensive exams, which are way worse than finals. (Late June)
  • Death. (date unknown)

These are some things I don’t understand:

  • Why I have to study analysis when I want to go into applied cryptography.
  • Why similar linear operators have the same eigenvalues.
  • Why you’d want to live here (in Los Angeles, that is).
  • What becomes of me.

If you haven’t before, you should check out my links to friends websites, because there’s some good content on each of them.

Until next post, adios.

Quarter Number Two…

The second quarter is in full swing here at UCI, and life is just as chaotic as it was last quarter, if not more so, what with classes, TA duties, and wedding planning…but I’m loving it all.  School is challenging and exciting, and the people continue to be great.  My life may be considered stressful by some, but I like to think that I never really have a dull moment.

Expect more soon.

My UCI…

I made a google map to show you a little bit of what UCI is like (from my perspective). I’ll probably add to it as the year goes on.

Purchase of the day…

Christine bought me a George Foreman grill as a gift for my new apartment (I haven’t actually moved in yet, but the grill was on sale this week). I’m looking forward to being able to use it to make many tasty meals. I’m also looking forward to a bit more of life on my own, because I really haven’t experienced that yet.

I have a place to live…!

It looks like this:

Unit N Floorplan

It’s a 3-bedroom, 2-bath apartment in the Palo Verde housing community at UCI. There are already two guys living there; I talked to them both and they seem pretty legit. I’m glad that I finally know where I will be living for at least the next year.
